Sira Nights

Posted in Culture

Istanbul Cultural Center of Orlando organizes one of ancient traditions is gatherings known as 'Sira Nights', which bring together people sharing the same pleasures, world views and ideas.

The friendships formed there are even stronger than the ties between old school or army friends. Such gatherings take place in one another's houses or in rooms hired for the occasion. The name means literally 'nights by turns', since the members of the group take it in turns to host these events, which have a ceremonial character and are based on a sense of fraternity. Sira nights take place at Istanbul Ballroom and Traditional Anatolian Room in every two months at OTCC. Meanwhile the famous dish "Cig Kofte" is being prepared at front of guest, and became ready to serve with "Ayran" Turkish yogurt drink. Also, guests enjoy Turkish live music rest of the night.

By using materials from soldiers on all sides of the conflict, Örnek's film approaches the subject from an objective vantage point; never sacrificing historical fact for dramatic impact. In exploring the conflict through the perspectives of two British, three New Zealand, three Australian, and two Turkish soldiers, the filmmakers gradually break through the soldiers' dutiful exteriors to show exactly how they felt it from a human standpoint. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Kid Festivals

We celebrated the National Sovereignty and Children's Day (Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk Bayramı). It is a national holiday in Turkey, always celebrated on 23 April. The holiday commemorates the first opening of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey at Ankara in 1920. The day is celebrated as a children’s festival because children were awarded a special place in the April 23 festivities by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the modern Republic of Turkey.

Every year, Istanbul Cultural Center of Orlando organizes excursions to Turkey under the themes of culture, business, education and dialogue. Nile Foundation is not a travel agency; however, we do like to showcase Turkey to our American peers and colleagues. By doing this, we succeed in building personal bridges across continents by engaging American participants in meeting their Turkish counterparts.

While in Turkey, participants have the opportunity to visit with civic, educational, governmental and other entities. This visceral experience of Turkey at its finest works to break down any previously held stereotypes.

Our groups to Turkey are composed of about 6-15 people in order for guests to have the most sincere and personal experience of the culture and people of Turkey. A cross-section of the typical group could include a mixture of people from academia, civic organizations, government, journalism, the arts and the like.

The goals of Istanbul Cultural Center of Orlando with these trips are to:

* Promote mutual understanding through dialogue and discussion among the American participants and the Turkish society;

* Introduce and provide broad exposure to and education of Turkish cultural, political, economic, and social issues; and

* Allow Participants to gain an understanding of topics, including but not limited to, national security, foreign policy, trade, health, economic development & finance, the media, government affairs, religious diversity, minority rights, and any other achievements of contemporary Turkish civil society.
